Stars Soccer Review magazine was
produced to offer you a recap of soccer events
of 2006. The magazine will provide you with
information on the football Federations, Soccer
Associations, leagues, clubs, teams, and players
of the region.
Soccer Review will also be
passing on 30+ years of football/soccer
information, while keeping you abreast
with current soccer news. What lies ahead will
be covered in our “What to Expect” articles
based on our experience relative to the
information. From our experience we are of the
belief that the game of soccer/football has been
revolutionized via rules, but the actual game
has not change.
Stars Soccer Review magazine fits
well with Caribbean Stars objective to use
sports as a vehicle to allow less fortunate
and/or under privilege persons reach their full
potential from the exposure we can offer. We are
hopeful that by our example, others will follow
and support our move to reflect the community in
a positive light.
Soccer is the most popular sport
in the world and with the buzz still in the air
from the 2006 Germany World Cup what you can
expect is the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Canada
to be huge. To add to the soccer epidemic, Maple
Leaf Sports & Entertainment has brought in an
MLS Franchise (Toronto FC) into Canada.
Toronto FC the new MLS franchise
will start play in April and our intention is to
stay abreast with their progress. However, in
staying abreast we do believe that to reflect is
a process of moving forward and Germany World
Cup is part of this process.
World Cup Germany probably meant
different things to different people, but for me
it meant that my dream of being at a World Cup
came through. As a soccer player I aspired (as
most players) to play for my country on the
world stage. But after migrating to Canada from
Trinidad and Tobago in 1972 I recognized that a
World Cup experience for me could have only
occurred as a spectator.
I migrated while in training for
International duty as a
member of the Trinidad and Tobago senior
national squad. It is ironic that the
international training back then was geared
towards T&T preparation for World Cup Germany 1974.
Trinidad and Tobago came close to
qualifying at a World Cup on two occasions. In 1973
for '74' Germany and again in1989 for World Cup
Italy in 1990 . The first was the “ Dream team of
1973” led by Everald “Gally” Cummings, Steve
David and others, which lost to Haiti on
questionable calls by the referee. The second
disappointment was the T&T team ‘‘Strike
Squad” of 1989 which lost 1-0 to USA at home
when a tie would have secured a spot at FIFA World
Cup in France in 1990.
However for Trinidad and Tobago the third time
was a charm and after their 2-1 come from behind
victory over Mexico, I felt the time had come. I
made arrangements to travel to Trinidad to cover
the Soca Warriors as a Freelance journalist for
the Caribbean Camera Newspaper of Toronto and
when the Soca Warriors defeated Bahrain my
Journey to the World Cup was upgraded to a
member of the Trinidad and Tobago media team as
a FIFA Accredited Freelance Journalist
At this time I will like to take this
opportunity to thank the T&T Football Federation
and Mr. Jack Warner for recognizing my
contributions to community and the game of
soccer over the years. I would also like to
thank my wife and family for understanding my
commitment and passion for sports and community
involvement. And last but not least, I will like
to dedicate this magazine to my mom (who art in
heaven), for giving me and all of her children
the spiritual foundation necessary to cope with
the trials and tribulations of today’s
environment. Until then Mom!.
